As hurricane season begins, the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management reminds residents that flooding remains one of the most life-threatening hazards in our region—especially on our roads.
Key Flood Safety Tips for Drivers:
-
Never drive through flooded roadways. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you off your feet, and 12 inches can sweep away a vehicle.
-
Obey all barricades and signage. They are placed for your safety, not as a suggestion.
-
Floodwater is unpredictable. Even shallow-looking water may conceal washed-out roads, sharp debris, or live electrical hazards.
“We say it every year because it saves lives: if you see water on the road, turn around—don’t drown.”
— Jesse Ryholt, Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator
